Rent Receipt Format — Free Template for HRA Claims

Rent receipts are what substantiate an HRA exemption claim, and employers reject them for predictable reasons — no landlord PAN where rent crosses ₹1 lakh a year, missing period, or no signature. This format covers what is actually checked.

The PAN threshold

Where annual rent exceeds ₹1 lakh, the landlord’s PAN must be reported in your declaration to the employer. If the landlord has no PAN, a signed declaration to that effect is required instead. This is the single most common reason HRA claims are disallowed at the employer stage.

Revenue stamp

A one-rupee revenue stamp is required on receipts for cash payments above ₹5,000. Payment by bank transfer avoids the issue entirely, and gives you a far better evidence trail.

Pay by bank transfer

Rent paid in cash is harder to substantiate if the claim is examined. A monthly bank transfer with the rent agreement and receipts together makes the claim close to unassailable.

Frequently asked questions

How many rent receipts do I need to submit?
Employers commonly ask for quarterly or monthly receipts covering the financial year. Some accept receipts for a few representative months along with the rent agreement.
Can I claim HRA if I pay rent to my parents?
Yes, provided the arrangement is genuine — the parent owns the property, rent is actually paid, and the parent declares it as income. These claims are examined closely.
Is a rent agreement needed as well as receipts?
Most employers ask for both. The agreement establishes the tenancy and the rate; the receipts establish payment.
What if I forgot to submit receipts to my employer?
You can still claim the exemption when filing your return, provided you have the documentation to support it if asked.
